Indian Ambassador to the Maldives Munu Mahawar has said that the people's decision against the presence of the Indian military in the Maldives will be respected.

The Transitional Spokesperson, Mohamed Firuzul Abdullah Haleel, said that India would cooperate in that regard.

The Indian ambassador paid a courtesy call on President-elect Dr, Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday.

Firuzul, who was appointed as the transitional spokesperson, held his first press conference today. The meeting was held at the office of the President-elect in Dimyath.

Replying to a question from a journalist at the press conference, Firuzul said that during his meeting with the Indian ambassador, Dr. Muizzu made it very clear to the ambassador that he would withdraw the Indian military in the Maldives, and the Indian ambassador said he would respect that decision.

"The Indian Ambassador has said that he will respect the decision. He will also respect the sovereignty of the Maldives in general," Firuzul explained.

He said no further special discussions would be held after the meeting with the Indian ambassador and the main objective at the moment was to start the transition phases. The work includes reviewing various agreements and what has not been done in the agreements, while discussions and works are also underway on what needs to be done, he said.
