The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened application for a senior judge and a judge in the civil court.

Farhad Rasheed has been temporarily in charge of the post following the sudden death of Ahmed Nimal Junaid, who was the chief justice of the Civil Court, on September 20.

JSC announced the application for a judge in the civil court as one of the existing judges would be appointed as the chief justice.

Applicants are required to have a first degree in Islamic Shariah or law or Islamic Shariah and law and have at least two years of experience as a judge or practising law or both.

The applicants must also produce a document to show that he/she is not a member of any political party and if he/she is a shareholder in any business involved in a law firm or legal work or is a shareholder in such a place.

Additional conditions include not being a person who has been convicted by a trial court of having committed an offence or fraud or bribery as defined in Islam and must not have completed the sentence in the last seven years after being convicted of committing an offence under the Code of Criminal Procedure or committing any form of indecency or terrorism.

It also states that if the applicant has a proven debt, he/she should be paying the debt in accordance with the judgment and should not be a person who has been convicted of a criminal offence and is serving his sentence.

The salary for the post of Chief Justice is MVR 31,000, living allowance of MVR 15,000 and risk allowance of MVR1,650. Additionally, medical insurance and telephone allowance will be provided as per the rules of parliament.

A civil court judge will get a total of MVR 46,650, including MVR 30,000 per month as basic salary, MVR15,000 per month as living allowance and MVR1,650 per month as risk allowance.

The last date to apply for both the posts is October 19, 2023.
