President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his gratitude to PNC for electing him as the party's president.
Dr. Muizzu made the remarks in an exclusive interview with One Media today.
Dr. Muizzu's election as party president comes in the wake of projections by political analysts That Dr. Muizzu could be challenged as the rift within the PNC/PPM coalition intensifies after the presidential election. Druing the interview, Dr. Muizzu noted that he would lead the party with a spirit of togetherness.
"First of all, I would like to thank the PNC for amending the basic rules that held the Senate last night and made me the president of the PNC. So, with much respect to the former president of the PNC, the current chairperson, Abdul Raheem, and everyone else in the leadership and the Senate, I thank them for the decision," Dr. Muizzu said.
The president-elect noted that the change in the structure of the PNC was the same format followed by PPM, and that the change would allow both parties to operate in the same way.
"PPM regulations state that if a party member is elected president, they will be elected party president as well. I believe this is the norm in many countries," Dr. Muizzu said.
Dr. Muizzu said that the PNC is a people's party that represents Maldivians. He added that PNC was formed to serve the people and the president and vice-president elected by the public are from PNC as well. Dr. Muizzu said that he would like to make the PNC a party that serves the people better and does good work.
Dr. Muizzu said that he sees PPM and PNC as one and believes that they can work together very well.
"Even if we operate as two parties, we are one family. There should be no reason why we shouldn't work together. I'm going to prioritise this. I think the same can be seen from PPM as well. I don't see any other approach from my side," Dr. Muizzu said.
