The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has appointed PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdulla as the chairman of the legally constituted Transitional Committee to oversee the transfer of power to President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for a period of five years.
According to transitional law, the director general of transition has to be appointed by the Civil Service Commission as requested by the president-elect. As per the law, the office of the transitional committee has to be set up after the declaration of the permanent results of the presidential election. The election commission is yet to announce the permanent results of Saturday's presidential election.
Abdul Raheem, however, said that even if the final results of the elections are not announced, other committees concerned can start work and the work is being done now.
In order to do this work, the law says that the Director General of Transitional Committee will have to provide certain necessary provisions, including the office of the President-elect and its belongings and staff, as well as their salaries and allowances, and, if necessary, various technical experts and their salaries and perks.
However, as per the law on the process of transition, the maximum expenditure can be MVR 1 million.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has formed a committee on his behalf to oversee the transition process. The committee will be headed by Corporate Service Secretary at the President's Office, Hussain Amir. Chief of Staff Ali Zahir will oversee the process.
PNC candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the second round of the presidential election held on Saturday with 54.04 percent of the vote.
