The Election Commission (EC) has said that a former member of the commission will not have access to the online portal used to re-register to vote in the second round of the presidential election to be held on 30th of this month.

A local news had earlier reported that Ali Nashath, who resigned as an EC member, had created a backdoor for the re-registration portal and gave it to MDP. The portal is being accessed by people in the MDP campaign office at Mookai Suites.

The Election Commission said in a statement today that the portal used for re-registration has been used for re-registration for all elections held after the 2020 council elections.

"The work of the portal is being monitored under the advice and guidance of an IT security consultant. I assure you that access to the portal will not be available to a former member of the Commission or anyone not concerned," The EC said.

The Election Commission (EC) has said that the news spread by some people to create doubts in the minds of the people about the online portal for re-registration is untrue. The Election Commission has urged the people not to spread untrue stories that could undermine the trust between the commission, the people and the candidates.

The Election Commission opened re-registration for the second round of the election at 3 pm last Friday. The deadline expired at 4 pm yesterday.

The Election Commission today said that more than 19,000 applications have been processed out of more than 47,000 applications submitted online, at its counters and through provincial focal points within three days. More than 27,000 forms are in the process of being validated.

The Election Commission further said that once the re-registration forms are verified, the re-registration list for voting will be shared with candidates and parties in the Government Gazette and a two-day period will be opened for complaints.
