The Election Commission (EC) has said that the opportunity to re-register to vote in the second round of the presidential election will not be extended.
The deadline for re-registration, which began last Friday, expired at 4:00 pm today, EC Vice-President Ismail Habib said in a tweet. However, the opposition has proposed to extend the deadline for re-registration, saying the MDP is committing fraud. The motion was made on the grounds that the government was influencing the re-registration.
The Election Commission has given three days to re-register for the second round of the election. It was from 03:00 pm last Friday to 04:00 pm today.
Election Commission Vice-President Ismail Habib said 9,206 people had submitted forms on the first day of re-registration. He said 7,267 people applied online on the first day.
Habib said 16,287 people submitted forms for re-registration on the second day while 11,082 forms were submitted online alone.
Out of all the applicants, 10,271 have been re-registered already, Habib said. So far, 1,546 applications have been rejected for various reasons, he said, adding that the applications were rejected because all the required information was not complete.
The forms submitted online to the election are shown as incomplete because the verification process has not been completed. As soon as the validity of the forms is confirmed, the message will be received, he said.
