The Democrats' presidential candidate, Ilyas Labeeb has said that he is ready to discuss with all parties to form a coalition in the second round of the presidential election.
Ilyas won third place in yesterday's presidential election. Therefore, he was not eligible to compete in the second round. He received 6.94 percent of the vote. That’s 15,558 votes.
The election was won by the PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohammed Muizzu. He got 45.26 percent of the votes which totals at 101,394 votes. President Solih received 38.25 percent of the vote, or 85,698 votes.
The Democrats have not yet started talks on forming a coalition, he said at a press conference today. Discussions with other parties are being conducted on the advice of the party, he said.
"We have not closed any door. We have not decided to talk to any particular people. We are a political party. Political parties will discuss political issues with political parties. We will conduct those discussions with all people," he said.
Ilyas said the votes received in the first election of a political party will not determine defeat or victory. The Democrats were not formed just for this presidential election, he said.
For The Democrats, this is just the beginning and they can get to the destination they want.
He said the people gave a large majority to the MDP in 2018 and all political parties should look into the reason why the party lost votes.
