The Election Commission (EC) has revealed that two days will be given to re-register for the second round of the presidential election.
EC Chairman Fuwad Thaufeeq said in a tweet today that eligible voters will have two days to re-register in the second round of the presidential election to be held on the 30th of this month.
“The time is currently scheduled for the 16th to 17th of this month, but we will officially gazette it,” he said.
According to the Presidential Election Act, a candidate is deemed to have received a majority of the votes cast in the presidential election if he receives more than 50 percent of the valid votes cast. Therefore, a person can be elected as President if he or she receives more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a second round of the presidential election must be held.
Opposition Candidate Mohamed Muizzu received 101,394 votes, while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 85,698 votes. Muizzu, defeated President Solih by a margin of 15,696 votes.
The Democrats' candidate Ilyas Labib received 6.93 percent of the vote. Independent candidate Umar Naseer received 2.81 percent of the vote. The JP candidate, Qasim Ibrahim, got 2.49 percent. Then there are MNP candidate Nazim and two independent candidates, Faris Maumoon and Hassan Zameel.
