The Democrats founder, Mohamed Nasheed has hinted that he may support the opposition candidate, Mohammed Muizzu in the second round of the presidential election.

President Nasheed has said that he does not think that a government that will implement more extremist ideology than the last five years will come to power in the next five years.

"It is difficult to see the fear of a government that will give space to extremism and implement it more than it has in the past five years," Nasheed tweeted a while ago.

Referring to some religious organizations such as Jamiyyatul Salaf, President Nasheed has previously said they are part of extremist ideology.

Salaf however had decided to support the opposition candidate in the presidential election this time. In addition to Salaf, more than 100 religious scholars have supported Muizzu.

The election was the first time President Nasheed had split from the MDP and formed a new political party called The Democrats.

Ilyas Labeeb received the third highest number of votes with 15,528 votes, running as the candidate of The Democrats.

The election results showed that the most votes were received by Dr. Muizzu who received 100,691 votes. The second most-voted candidate was 85,260 votes which is the incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih Therefore, Muizzu has a good chance of winning the election in the second round.

However, to win the second round, The Democrats' support is essential. Therefore, according to President Nasheed's tweet, he will likely support Muizzu in the second round of the election.

Both Dr. Muizzu and President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih have said they will talk to other parties to form a coalition in the second round. However, no party has yet decided on the second round.

Independent candidate Umar Naseer received 6,311 votes, JP leader Gasim Ibrahim received 5,469 votes, Independent Candidate Faris Maumoon received 2,975 votes and MNP candidate Mohammed Nazim received 1,863 votes while Independent Candidate Mohammed Zameel got 329 votes.

A second round of the election is scheduled to be held as more than 50 percent of the votes required by the law have not been received by any single candidate.

The second round of voting will be held on the 30th of this month.
