Election Commission (EC) will open opportunity for re-registration for eligible voters if a second round is required for the presidential elections, the Commission has said.

EC's Vice President Ismail Habeeb told 'One' that the first round of voter registration included identifying where voters will cast ballot in the first round as well as where they will be if a second round is required.

He added that if a second round of voting is required, voters will be given the opportunity to re-register.

"The first round of registration included two parts. Registration for the first round of voting and highlighting where voters will be if a second round is required. If the election results in a second round, voters will be given the opportunity to re-register," Habeeb said.

According to the Presidential Election Act, a candidate is considered to have received majority if they receive more than 50 percent of the valid votes cast in the presidential election. Therefore, a person can be elected as President if he or she receives more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a second round of the presidential election must be held.

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9, 2023. If a second round of voting is required, the second round of voting will be held on September 30, EC said.

Eight candidates are contesting the presidential election. This is the most contested presidential election ever.
