Former Attorney General Mohamed Munawwar, who had earlier said that he would contest the upcoming presidential elections, has decided not to contest the elections.
Munawwar had announced in March this year that he would contest next month's presidential election as an independent candidate.
Munawwar also completed the 1,500 signatures required to contest as an independent candidate in the elections.
Munawwar said in a tweet that he has decided not to contest the presidential elections. He, however, did not give any reason for his decision not to contest.
"I would like to thank all those who supported me, encouraged me and signed the candidacy form. I would like to thank those who helped me in the election process," Munawwar tweeted.
Munawwar has been critical of the government's various policies. He also criticized the government's policies in the Chagos case.
