Opposition Party PPM has decided not to boycott the upcoming presidential elections in September.
Former president Abdulla Yameen had asked PPM to boycott the elections following Supreme Court's ruling on Sunday that the Election Commission (EC) was right not to accept Yameen's candidacy.
Yameen asked the PPM Senate to boycott the election if it believes that his right to vote has been violated. He also asked his supporters to boycott the election. PPM senate held a discussion over Yameen's request on Sunday.
The Senate meeting had to be adjourned after some senators refused to boycott the election. However, after an hour of debate, the senate voted on the matter.
Before the vote, PNC president Abdul Raheem Abdulla said he intended to seek President Yameen's advice as the senate and the people's spirit was not to boycott the election.
When asked to vote, 67 of the senate members present voted not to boycott the election while 46 members voted in favour of boycotting the election.
President Yameen's election agent Mohammed Tholal said the senate had decided for PPM to contest in the election after discussing the possibilities of fighting to free president Yameen.
