Supreme Court has commenced the first hearing of the petition filed by opposition PPM's presidential candidate, former president Abdulla Yameen, against Election Commission (EC)'s rejection of his candidacy form, after the hearing was delayed due to a power outage.

State Electric Company (STELCO) has said that the Supreme Court lost power due to an issue with a substation in the area.

Supreme Court had scheduled the hearing for 1500hrs on Friday.

STELCO's media officer Ahmed Mohamed told 'One' that the power outage was not only in the Supreme Court but also in the area where the court was located. However, the issue has been resolved and the Supreme Court has now been supplied with electricity, he said.

Additionally, former president Yameen has also been presented to Court a while ago.

Yameen's candidacy was submitted to the EC on Tuesday morning, following which EC declared Yameen ineligible to contest the presidential election.

EC stated that Yameen does not meet the requirements of Article 109(f) of the Constitution as he has been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to more than 12 months in prison.

According to Article 109 of the Constitution, a person who has been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to more than one year in prison can contest the presidential election only after three years of serving his sentence.

Former president Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence for corruption and money laundering in the lease of V. Aarah.

The Election Commission has been asked to respond in writing to the constitutional petition filed by Yameen in the Supreme Court.
