Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) president Faris Maumoon has stated that securing 51 percent threshold to win the presidential election should be abolished and the system should be changed to determine the winner of the election.

Speaking on CNM's "2023" programme, Faris said on Thursday night that it is a process that wastes a lot of time. Faris added that administrations have to resort to forming coalitions due to the 51 percent threshold of votes.

"Maldives is not a country that needs a coalition government," Faris stated.

He added that coalitions are not a feasible option for administrations, noting that coalitions dissolve soon.

"We can do this by amending the Constitution. If we have this perfect presidential system and if we want to make the government that is formed to be able to implement very powerful things for the people, then it is very important for the Constitution to be changed," Faris said.

He stated that the presidential system suits Maldives well, and whoever wins the highest number of votes in the elections should be allowed to form a government because it would make the processes easier.

He added that if MRM wins the elections, the government will work on introducing digital banks and wallets, and the necessary laws will be put in place to allow it.

Faris said that his Running Mate for the elections will be announced within 48 hours.

“We will hopefully choose a person who is popular among the people, who can bring more votes than we do alone and who is responsible, sincere and capable of doing the job of the government,” he said.
