President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the goal is to bring 3 million tourists annually to the Maldives by 2028.

Speaking at a meeting held at Hoarafushi island today as part of his presidential campaign, the President said that during the Covid-19 period, some people had posed several challenges to the government. He said some political leaders had even come out to claim that no tourists would visit the country and that resorts should be utilized for other sources of income such as farming and making by-products from fishing.

President Solih highlighted that the Maldives has reached where it is today due to the important measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed that 1.9 million tourists are expected to visit the Maldives this year.

"We have reached this point today because of the measures taken at that time. By 2028, we are aiming to bring more than 3 million tourists to the Maldives," he said.

He said that talks about doubling the economy include the expected and targeted growth in the Tourism industry. He also said that Velana International Airport, Hanimaadhoo Airport, and Addu Airport are being developed under a long-term plan and vision.
