Monday's Parliament session concluded after asking all parties to nominate and send a list of lawmakers to be included in the parliament committees by 9:00pm on Monday night.
Today's sitting is the second of a series of out-of-session sittings presented by MDP members under the rules of the house.
The agenda for today's meeting was to decide on the changes to be made in the Parliamentary Standing Committees and the Committee on Security Services (241 Committee) to represent members of the political parties and those who do not belong to any particular party.
The change in the inclusion of members in parliamentary committees comes in the wake of a change in the number of members from different parties and independent candidates in the committees following the defection of some MPs from MDP.
During the meeting, 10 amendments were proposed to how members are included in the 16 parliamentary standing committees and the committee on security services. The amendments were proposed by members of the opposition party PPM and the newly formed The Democrats.
The lawmakers have moved amendments to remove MDP's majority in all parliamentary committees and to make it impossible for MDP members to even head many committees.
However, none of the amendments were passed as the party already has a huge majority in the Parliament. Therefore, the Chair voted on the option of the report on the representation of members in the committees.
This is a decision that, as per parliamentary rules, MDP, which has a majority in the house, will get a large percentage of committees. The decision was passed by 35 of the 50 members present at the meeting. A total of 14 lawmakers voted against passing the decision.
Speaking at the end of the session, Villifushi MP Hassan Afeef said that he has requested the leaders of the political parties to send the names of the members to be represented in the committees by 9 p.m.
