Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's hearing scheduled for today, on charges of money laundering and accepting bribes in connection with the R. Fugiri lease deal through MMPRC has been canceled again.

This is the fifth time President Yameen's case has had to be canceled after the hearing was scheduled.

Ahmed ‘Krik’ Riza has also been charged with money laundering and being a medium for accepting bribes, while Sun Construction and Sun Investment have been charged with money laundering in the Fuggiri case. All the charges are being pursued together.

The Criminal Court is currently in the process of recording state evidence in the case. The court has so far recorded the testimony of five people, including former Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb and Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath.

In the last hearing, the testimony of the officer who examined Krik Riza's fingerprint was recorded.

However, today's hearing was also canceled as the court was informed that Krik Riza would not be able to attend the trial with medical documents as he was unwell.

The court will hear the case next on May 11. The court also posted the case for further hearing on May 13.

According to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office, President Yameen had misused his official position and used Krik Riza as a medium to receive $1,117,000 in bribes and used Sun Construction and Engineering and Sun Investment to launder the money.

A total of $38,334,560 is trying to be recovered to the state in the case.

This includes $1,349,885 in fines, $2,295,250 collected from proceeds of crime, and $34,689,425 in fines.
