Criminal Court on Tuesday added a 15-day remand period for the man arrested regarding the hit-and-run that left MNU's senior lecturer Ali Hafeez in critical condition.
Police arrested Shamaan Abdul Shukoor, 22, R. Inguraidhoo on Monday. Shamaan is being charged with causing an accident and fleeing the scene.
Shamaan's defence lawyer stated that while he does not deny the injuries sustained by Hafeez, the injuries were not caused while crossing on the zebra crossing.
"The injuries were caused when the pedestrian panicked after seeing the motorbike and ran into the bike," the lawyer stated.
Investigation officer for the incident stated that Shamaan was driving without a license and that he was speeding. The officer also added that Shamaan had confessed to speeding.
Although Shamaan's lawyers have requested bail, the investigating officer requested to have his remand period increased.
Criminal Court ordered a 15-day remand period for Shamaan.
The court order stated that Shamaan was arrested lawfully and that he poses a threat to society if released.
Hafeez was transferred to Cochin, India, in an air ambulance today.
