Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and Maamigili constituency MP Qasim Ibrahim has stated that no solution can be reached through large demonstrations over Chagos issue.

Speaking to VTV on Friday, Qasim said JP will not join the demonstrations by the opposition over the issue. However, he also highlighted that though the administrations decision in the issue is not right, demonstrating won't change ITLOS ruling over the matter.

"What can be done through demonstrating? It will only result in more chaos within society. Demonstrating won't change ITLOS ruling. JP does not have to partake in the opposition's demonstrations for political gain," Qasim said.

He added that it was unconstitutional for President Solih to send the letter to Mauritian Prime Minister without parliament's approval. Qasim further added that President Solih cannot be ousted by demonstrating, and that he will have to take responsibility for anything that happens to JP members during the demonstration.

Qasim stated that majority of the political leaders joining the demonstration are running for the elections and have a political agenda.

"The opposition would want me there so they can push me aside when it comes to the elections," Qasim said.

Qasim stated that any change in ITLOS decision should be sought out within the law and that he is currently in discussion with experts on the matter. He added that under a JP leadership, the administration will appeal the ITLOS decision wherever possible within the first six months.
