Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has stated that the opposition is using the maritime dispute between Mauritius and Maldives for political gain.

In a statement released on Wednesday night regarding International Tribunal for Law of Sea (ITLOS)'s ruling over Mauritius and Maldives maritime dispute on 28 April, MRM stated that the party will not support any decision that undermines the sovereignty of Maldives, and that if such a ruling has been made, MRM would stand against it.

MRM said the issue needs to be appealed for the benefit of the public, adding that the maritime dispute has been used for political gain which would have adverse effects on the public.

"Using terms as 'part of Maldives seas were sold off' for political gain reduces the significance of the issue. Such acts will deter the efforts by Maldives to succeed in the case if it is appealed," MRM said.

MRM called on all political figures to stop using this dispute for political gain.

MRM further stated that Maldives gained a 200 square mile area and that no previous government has acted in a way it would have been lost to the Maldives.

MRM added that the administration changed its standing in 2019 and sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Mauritius, and that it is concerning that the public are unaware of the content of the letter.

MRM said the decision in the maritime dispute causes loss to the Maldives and that MRM does not believe this to be a success. MRM added that it would affect the Maldives fishermen greatly.
