Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has revealed that they had proposed to create a coalition regulation and to maintain the presidential system in the Maldives, during a meeting with the ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) last night.

However, they noted that a decision is yet to be reached on whether the two parties will work together at the upcoming Presidential Elections.

The meeting took place at MRM office on Monday night.

Speaking to One Online, the President of MRM, Ahmed Faris Maumoon revealed that they had proposed to clear certain points. As such, they took a clear stand on the fact that MRM would not support anything that may threaten or question the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, and had requested to seek documents and information on whether such an act has been done in recent history.

He further stated that trust needs to be built on the coalition agreement, which is something that has failed so far. As such, Faris reiterated that neither the members of MRM nor the public believe that the coalition agreement is progressing in a trustable manner. Hence, he noted that they had proposed to create a coalition regulation last night.

Fariis also highlighted that the Presidential System is the best governance system for the Maldives, which would benefit both the nation and the citizens the most. Hence, MRM wishes to seek assurance that the system will be maintained in the future and had asked for reassurance last night. Faris noted that MDP was very hopeful regarding it.

While MRM and MDP have now held two meetings, MRM had previously met MDP's Presidential Candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well. They had also met with Jumhooree Party Leader, Qasim Ibrahim.
