Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has denied talks that Maldives lost disputed waters to Mauritius as per the ruling by International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has ruled in favor of the Maldives where the country's claim for a larger share of the disputed waters with Mauritius will be upheld, on Friday.
ITLOS allocated the disputed overlapping territory of 95,000 square kilometers between Maldives and Mauritius, providing each country with a 200-mile continental shelf.
Speaking to the press at a press conference held at President's Office, Minister Fayyaz said misinformation was being spread about the issue, noting that the EEZ was determined for the north, and not for the disputed area with Mauritius.
"We did not lose part of our seas. In fact, we gained an area we can work on economic development. The spread of misinformation should stop," Minister Fayyaz said.
Minister Fayyaz stated that prior to the budget discussions last year, no talks had ever taken place regarding Chagos being part of Maldives ever. He added that based on international records, it is evident chaos was never part of Maldives.
