The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has revealed that work for the 2023 Presidential Election can only be begun after a main center for the Elections is finalized, adding that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured resolve to the issue soon.

Sharing the commission's concerns and updates regarding the 2023 Presidential Election before the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions, Vice-Chairman Ismail Habeeb revealed that a main center for the election is yet to be finalized. He stated that after the previous center being run at the old Jamaluddin School was taken over by the government, they had moved the equipment present there to 10 classrooms in the old Arabiyya School building.

Habeeb noted that the building had been broken into and their equipment was stolen twice since they were moved. He highlighted that while no materials relevant to the election were stolen, important documents required for the office have gone missing.

He however noted that the government had assured that they will provide the old building of Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu by the end of the month, though Habeeb added that a contingency would need to be in place if it was not available. As such, he added that Dharubaaruge would be required starting April 25, so that they could conduct the necessary renovations before starting work in May.

Habeeb also stated that they had met the President with these concerns today, who had assured that a solution would be reached soon to the concerns.
