President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed met for the first time since the MDP Presidential Primary, which was full of chaos and heavy verbal criticisms of each other as they faced off for the Presidential Ticket of the party.

While they both met during a ceremony to celebrate India's 74th Republic Day at Dharubaaruge, they were seated at two different tables. As such, President Solih was seated with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Indian Ambassador to the Maldives while Nasheed was seated with Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.

Even though both President Solih and Nasheed had been rather competitive with each, photos from the ceremony painted a different picture as both were seen with smiles all around, even taking the time to pose for photographs.

The rift between long-time friends first started during the election of a Speaker to the current Parliament session, after which their disagreements and distance grew and have now formed two different factions in MDP, the country's largest political party.

Nasheed lost the MDP Presidential Primary last Saturday to President Solih, who was able to secure 61 percent of the votes while Nasheed only received 39 percent. Even though Nasheed has since conceded his defeat, he refused to back President Solih for a second term this year.

Instead, Nasheed had established a separate branch within MDP under 'Fikuregge Dhirun', the tagline used for his primary campaign. He has been since racking up support for the branch, and aims to onboard over 50,000 members across the nation.
