Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has ceased waste management operations in public spaces in Male' area.
WAMCO will however continue waste management operations for households in Male'.
WAMCO released a press statement on Monday stating that WAMCO has carried out waste management operations in Male' for the past 5 years in accordance with the agreement between the company and Male' City Council. However, since the agreement expired on Sunday, WAMCO will cease waste management operations for public spaces in Male' area.
WAMCO stated that City Council wishes to continue the services without an agreement, however, WAMCO will not continue the services as such. WAMCO will continue to provide waste management operations for households registered for the service.
Male' City Council had previously released a statement on 10 September 2022 stating the Council has decided to take over waste management operations to cut cost. City Council further said that despite spending MVR 2.5 million monthly on waste management, the Council was receiving multiple complaints about waste on the streets of Male' and Vilimale'. City Council stated that WAMCO had not been providing waste management services efficiently.
WAMCO in response stated that it would be more costly for City Council to provide the services, and that managing waste in Male' and Vilimale' with a budget of MVR 1.5 million a month and maintaining the vehicles needed for the operation is not feasible.
