MDP expressed discontentment at Speaker Nasheed's remarks about the party's registry, stating that MDP's registry has been validated.

Nasheed on Monday Tweeted a letter he sent to MDP's Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail in which he stated the MDP primary will not be fair due to the mix up in the party registry. In his letter, Nasheed stated that roughly 40,000 members will lose their voting rights due to the mix up in MDP's registry.

"I do not believe that a primary held under these circumstances would be fair," Nasheed said.

MDP released a statement on Monday night in response to Nasheed's claims, stating that the party's registry has been validated.

"Voting rights should be given to MDP members with valid membership. As such, MDP's registry has been validated according to the national congress, and people have the opportunity to sign up for the party. It is disheartening that the party's president raised questions regarding the validity of the party's registry when the party has been ensuring the registry remains valid," MDP said.

MDP said that according to the motion passed by the party's congress, the 54,599 members registered under Elections Commission (EC) have been validated as MDP members, and the remaining 39,911 members have been given 3 months to validate their membership with MDP as well.

MDP further stated that the congress had passed to remove membership of those who have registered for other parties, and any member holding a post in the party has been given 1 month to validate their membership.

"MDP's congress made the call to validate the party registry to ensure a fair election free of bias and influence from other political parties," MDP's statement said.
