Maldives government on Tuesday held a briefing session for Maldives Police Service (MPS) regarding the Chagos Archipelago issue.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath lead the session held at Iskandharu Building.

Police revealed that this session was arranged after the National Security Council had decided to brief the Police on the ongoing dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius.

The session which was held for officers ranking above Superintendent of Police, was attended by Home Minister Imran Abdulla in addition to the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed as well as some senior officials at the Attorney General's Office.

While the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is hearing a case regarding the disputed territory between the Maldives and Mauritius, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had previously issued an advisory opinion supporting the decolonization of the Chagos by the British.

Maldives had previously supported the UK while voting for the resolution at the UN, however, its stand has changed and is now supporting Mauritius and its claim for sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.
