Minister of Arts, Culture, and Heritage Yuma Maumoon has stated that she accepts there have been significant delays in reopening Olympus Cinema after completing renovations, adding that they are currently working to reopen the cinema by December 16.

The cinema closed its doors during the Covid-19 Pandemic, while major renovations began this year by the government, which claimed that major changes would be seen on the exterior and interior of the cinema.

Several artists and those working in the film industry have recently voiced their concerns over the delayed reopening of the main cinema in the country.

During the Parliament session held on Wednesday, MP for Makunudhoo constituency Mohamed Raee questioned Minster Yumna regarding the delays in reopening Olympus. In response, she noted that logistical difficulties in obtaining several materials for the renovation were an issue. However, she highlighted that it has since been solved and that works are ongoing to reopen the cinema by December 16th.

The Minister revealed that when the renovations are complete, the cinema will have a modern retractable screen and 7.1 surround sound for film screenings. Furthermore, she noted that two rooms will be prepared for music practice while another room will be prepared with a sound system for dance practice.

In addition to this, the premises will include a cafe as well as toilets segregated for Men, Women and People with Disabilities.
