President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the Government has not made any decisions that could affect the sovereignty of Maldives.

President Solih made the remarks while speaking at the official ceremony to mark the day Maldives embraced Islam, at Islamic Centre on Wednesday night.

He stated that Maldives had previously agreed with the United Kingdom (UK) regarding the disputed territory, to divide it equally between the Maldives and Mauritius. He added that Maldives held discussions with Mauritius in 2011 to sort the issue.

"The Government has not changed its stand on the issue," President Solih said.

Mauritius has previously submitted a motion to International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) regarding the disputed territory. Speaking on this, President Solih stated that Maldivian Government is not in discussion with any nation regarding the issue, but is working with ITLOS.

"We continue to defend our sovereignty in this issue," President Solih said.

President Solih criticised the misleading information being passed on the matter, calling it politically motivated to create divisions among the public.

"The Government has not made any decisions in this issue or any other issue relating to our foreign policy that would affect the sovereignty of Maldives. The Administration will not stand for such decisions," President Solih added.

He further added that that Maldivian territory is very clearly mentioned in the Constitution and that the latter clearly defines how Maldives should act according to the International Law of the Seas.

"God willing, we will emerge victorious in this with the support of the people," President Solih said.
