Prosecutor General (PG), Hussain Shameem, has said that it is not new for PG's to appeal sentences following a conviction.

PG Shameem made the comments on his personal blog.

PG's Office has decided to appeal the sentence of former Drug Enforcement Department officer Abdulrahman Rafeeu at High Court after Criminal Court sentenced him for 1 year 2 months for engaging in Homosexuality. PG Office made the decision to appeal citing they were not satisfied with the way the sentencing was carried out.

In his personal blog post on Sunday, PG Shameem said the PG's role is to ensure everyone receives fair treatment, and that sentences are given with due diligence.

"It is not new for lawyers or prosecutors to appeal a sentence if they disagree with the way it has been carried out. This is common practice," PG Shameem wrote in his blog post.

He further added that sentences should follow certain order, and that failing to follow it creates contradiction.
