Maldives Editor's Guild (MEG) has stated that Parliament asking media to remove published articles goes against freedom of press.
MEG made the statement in a press release on Thursday following Parliament's request to media outlets to remove articles published about the 241 Committee discussion on Police Act regulations after the closed meeting was aired live due to a 'technical' error.
MEG expressed concern at the Parliament's request to remove the articles that had been published. MEG further stated that journalists have the right to publish news after verifying the information.
Further to that, MEG added that they do not believe the articles pose any threat to national security.
"As per Article 146 of the Parliament regulations, it is the Parliament's responsibility to maintain secrecy of the Committee meetings", MEG statement read.
As such, MEG stated that the Parliament asking the Fourth Estate to remove articles goes against freedom of press and that if any party has issues with media content, they can appeal to the relevant authorities.
