Parliament on Wednesday passed the Green Tax Bill with the revisions submitted in August.
The bill was passed with the majority vote of 50 out of 52 members in attendance at the Parliament. The minimum vote required to pass the bill would have been 26.
The Tourism Act was revised and ratified in June 2022, stating Green Tax will resume in 2023. As such, Green Tax cannot be collected for the remainder of 2022. With this ratification, it was estimated the State will lose MVR 300 million in revenue.
However, with the new revision to the Bill, the State can collect Green Tax for the remainder of the year as well as the past months without Green Tax collection. The State submitted the revision to the Green Tax Bill to define clear terms for the taxable period and to define clear regulations.
