The delegation from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has met with former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor.
The meeting was revealed through a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The statement noted that the meeting with former President and Vice President were unsupervised.
As such, the delegation had met with former President Yameen while he was admitted at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that VP Adeeb had been met with at Maafushi prison.
The statement revealed that the five-day visit if the delegation concluded on the 6th of March 2019. The delegation consisted of the Chief of Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch of the OHCHR Mona Rishmawi as well as Associate Expert at the beach, Chiaki Ota.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the purpose of this delegation visit has been to assess and assist the government in improving efforts to ensure fundamental human rights.
