Maldivian aquanauts, Shafiya Naeem and Farha Amjad, descended into deep see as part of Nekton's expedition in Maldives against climate crisis.
The expedition kicked off in L. Atoll on Sunday.
The divers team comprising of Shafiya Naeem - Director General of Maldives Marine Research Institute, Far Amjad - Research Assistant at Nekton Maldives, began the expedition with Kimly Do who is piloting the submersible.
This marks the first all-female aquanaut team on such an expedition.
The mission will undertake the very first systematic survey and sampling of the ocean surrounding the Maldives from the surface to 1000 meters below sea level. It is a joint endeavour by UK marine research institute Nekton and the Maldivian Government.
The Mission is deploying state-of-the-art submersibles, alongside robotic and autonomous systems and will assist the team in learning what lies beyond 50 meters of sea level, which has been dubbed 'unchartered waters' as almost little to nothing is known of what lies beneath.
