Former prime minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, has on Tuesday applied for a review of the Federal Court's decision to uphold his conviction and sentence for the misappropriation of funds.

Federal Court in Malaysia found Najib guilty of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bid (1MDB).

Najib's lawyer from Messrs Share & Co have confirmed the legal firm has filed the review on behalf of Najib, naming the public prosecutor as the respondent.

The review is also seeking to set aside the court decision to dismiss his application to recuse Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and cite disqualification of Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali in High Court trial as evidence.

Najib is currently serving his sentence in Kajang Prison. He has also sought a stay of execution of his conviction and sentence, pending the hearing of his review application.

Malaysia's apex court had on 23 August rejected Najib's appeal and confirmed his conviction and sentence of 12 years, and RM210 million fine which was imposed by Kuala Lumpur High Court in July 2020.
