Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has stated that vigilante justice goes against Islamic Shariah.

PG Shameem made the remarks on his personal blog.

In his blog post, PG Shameem said that justice should be carried out by law enforcement personnel in accordance to Shariah and the Constitution.

"Vigilante justice is dangerous and goes against Islamic Shariah", PG Shameem wrote in his blog.

In his blog, PG Shameem further stated that the justice system in Maldives follows Islamic Shariah, and that no laws can be passed in Maldives which go against Islamic values and teachings as per the Constitution.

"Laws can be passed by the Parliament in accordance to Islamic Shariah and values. If a law contradicts the teachings of Islam and Shariah, the court will decide on that law. Unless a court passes a verdict that a law goes against Shariah, the people must follow the law", PG Shameem said.

PG Shameem further went on to highlight that the justice system in the Maldives follows certain regulations and standards. He added that the purpose of a law isn't just achieving verdicts, but that it is important to know how verdicts are reached through laws.

"Acting in anger or hatred towards a person based on their actions and carrying out vigilante justice is not permissible in Shariah" PG Shameem wrote.

In his blog post, PG Shameem noted that a person can only be charged for a crime and punished in accordance to the regulations set by the lawmakers in the society.
