A petition has been presented to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, with a total of 1065 signatures calling for dismissal of members of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Attorney Mariyam Shunana, who initiated the petition spoke to One Online regarding the matter. She said that the signatures had been collected over seven hours of work and added that not one person had refused to sign the petition.
Shunana said that while citizens of various islands who reside in Male’ had signed the petition, the people residing in Addu City had also contributed.
The Attorney said that there is concern that members of Parliament may not address the grievances of citizens who signed the petition. She added that should the Parliament turn their backs on the issue concerning the petition, there will be further steps that can be taken to address these issues.
The petition states that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has neglected their duty in addressing rampant corruption that had been widespread in Maldives.
The petition accuses members if the ACC in being compliant with the corruption and further urges President Solih to take measures against these members.
While the petition has been submitted, the authority to dismiss members of Independent Institutions is granted under the Constitution, to the members of Parliament.
