A motion submitted to the parliament to form a special force to work towards putting an end to acts of terror by radicalized groups in the Maldives has been accepted and forwarded to the 241 Committee.

Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed (Waddey) had submitted the motion and was accepted with the votes of 48 members of 54 present. Only one member had voted against it.

Submitting the motion, MP Waheed noted that radicalization has grown rampant in the island nation, highlighting the most recent attack on Environment Ministry's State Minister Ali Solih. Furthermore, it was highlighted that the Commissioner of Police had previously revealed that there were about 1,400 individuals who had been radicalized and were not hesitant to resort to violence in the name of religion.

This includes several individuals with a record of murder and violence, as investigated by the Comission on Deaths and Disappearances.

MP Waheed further added that these individuals had renounced the Maldivian government and laws, and have gotten hold of weapons and the knowledge of creating explosives and has had a record of targetting certain places, and currently run the risk of tourists falling into their crosshairs.

For the safety of all, MP Waheed had recommended to form a special command through Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force to work against such individuals.
