Maldives felt tremors of an earthquake that hit Indonesia during the early hours of Monday morning.
Maldives Meteorological Service confirmed to ONE Online that tremors from the earthquake were felt in Maldives, and were picked up by the service’s sensors in HDh. Hanimaadhoo and GDh. Kaadehdhoo.
They further added that there have been no reports of a Tsunami in the Maldives, and that the tremors of the effect witnessed in the Maldives were not strong enough to trigger a Tsunami.
Tremors were also felt in the capital city according to them, reports were received from several individuals. Some buildings in Male' City had also been evacuated following the quake.
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake had hit Indonesia's Sumatra today. The epicenter of the quake is 2584km away from Male' city. A magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Sumatra in 2004 had created a tsunami, killing over 200,000 people in communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean, including Maldives.
