The Bill on a proposed amendment to the Maldives Judges Act to revise the retirement age of judges to 65 years has been submitted to the Parliament.

As per the judges act, judges have no set tenure at the time of being appointed. However, it states that judges will be retired at the age of 70 years, while those above the age of 55 years could request to be retired.

A statement by the Attorney General's Office (AGO) noted that the government has proposed a Bill on amendments to the Judges Act to revise the age of retirement upon request to 65 years of age, along with further enhancements to the benefits structure along with minor revisions to the act.

The proposed amendments include making arrangements to apply for land or flats by private or government parties for those who do not have their own place to live, in addition to revising the living allowance under the benefit structure. With the proposed revision, the living allowance is required to be no less that 35 percent of the remuneration of a judge.

The AGO also noted that the qualifications required to be a judge are also being revised.
