India's Afcon's Infrastructure has said the self-evaluating platform (SEP) that ran aground near Vilimale' reef will be removed in two days.

The SEP ran aground on 16 August around 0245hrs and was noticed by Marine Police. The incident left three injured.

Afcons released a press statement on Tuesday, stating that the SEP had run aground due to bad weather. The statement said Afcons has mobilised all the equipment needed to remove the SEP.

"We will remove the platform in the next two days if weather permits. We will ensure the reef is not damaged in the process", Afcons said.

At a press conference held by Planning Ministry on Tuesday, Project Manager Mohamed Jinah said that such incidents may occur during projects such as this. He added that the Ministry and stakeholders will work together with Arun Consultancy to avoid such incidents in the future.

Jinah assured that the bridge project timeline will not be impacted by the incident.

Speaking to press, Project Manager Mohamed Ibrahim said that Afcons has mobilised an additional SEP as well as additional equipment needed for the project.

Vilimale' constituency MP Ali Usham had submitted an urgent motion to the parliament due to delays in removing the SEP from the reef. He said that the reef had suffered extensive damages and that the administration should monitor the project closely to avoid such in the future.
