Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that Parliament is not cooperating and that the government will look into and take measures against coalition members. MDP is one of the members that make up the current ruling coalition of political parties.
MDP’s Campaign Spokesperson, Afshan Latheef, has said this while speaking to the press regarding the matter. She said that various parties that are members if the coalition are not assisting in the passing of the Bill to empower Presidential Commissions at Parliament. These Commissions assembled by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are the Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery and the Commission on Investigating Deaths and Disappearances. There have currently been severe delays in taking the Bill to empower these Commissions at Parliament.
Afshan said that the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was brought to fruition through the coalition. She noted that the government manifestos and policies had been agreed upon and promoted by all coalition parties during the Presidential campaign.
The MDP spokesperson noted that these policies and manifestos had led to a successful campaign that resulted in this Presidency. She said therefore that the cooperation and assistance in bringing these pledges to fruition is compulsory for coalition members. Afshan noted that it is grievous that these members are not taking actions to provide cooperation at this time. She said therefore that the government will look into, and be taking all necessary measures against coalition leaders.
She noted that the stance of other parties on the matter of voting for the Bill to empower Presidential Commissions remains unclear. She said that there should be no obstructions to assisting in the passing of the Bill to empower Presidential Commissions if there is no relation between party members and the issues addressed by the Commissions.
