Maldives National Party (MNP) has decided to submit a motion to the Parliament, calling for a probe into the Maldivian government's actions over potentially safeguarding Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the Maldives.
While the party has decided to submit a motion to the Parliament, their Vice President and Villimale MP, Ahmed Usham noted that the decision to safeguard Gotabaya in the Maldives was done in secrecy, much like most of the actions of this government.
CNN cited a senior security official in Sri Lanka noting that the Maldivian Air Traffic Controller had denied clearance for the military aircraft to land in the Maldives. However, they were granted clearance once former President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed was directly involved.
CNN had noted that they had contacted Nasheed for a comment, but their calls were unanswered, like the many texts from journalists in a WhatsApp group created for parliament media queries.
Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs have also refused to comment on the matter at this time.
