Maldives Monetary Authory (MMA) has unveiled the new currency symbol for Maldivian Rufiya; a first in Maldivian history.

The symbol was unveiled by Environment Minister, Aminath Shauna, at a ceremony held at MMA on Sunday.

The currency symbol was designed by Hassan Shujau as part of MMA's competition for currency symbol design last year which attracted over 70 design submissions. The winning design was chosen by a panel of judges including officials from MMA and Dhivehi Bahuge Academy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shauna said that it is a great privilege for Maldives to be included among the list of countries that have a currency symbol. She added that the currency symbol's depiction of Thaana lettering gives it a uniqueness and that it is important to enable easy use of this symbol.

MMA's Governor, Ali Hashim, stated that the new currency symbol will be used in the re-prints. He added that it is important for the currency symbol to be made usable digitally.
