Elections Commission (EC) has revealed their decision to dissolve Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) over their failure to reach 3,000 members within the given deadline.

EC had issued a warning on dissolving four political parties on May 18th over not being able to meet the 3,000 member rule. These parties are Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM), Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD) and MLSDP.

In their warning, the EC noted that failure to meet the number by June 15 will result in the dissolvement of the party.

Secretary-General at the EC, Hassan Zakariyya had previously noted that all parties had submitted forms to meet the 3,000 membership goal, where he noted that the forms will be checked for validity next.

After the processing of the forms, all other parties were able to meet the required number of members except for MLSDP. A statement by EC noted that due to their failure to meet the membership goal, they have noted the party to follow through the required procedures to dissolve the party.
