Economic Minister and MDP Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, shares details of 'Floating City' project by Dutch Docklands, calling it a scam.
Minister Fayyaz made the remarks in response to a message sent by former President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, to MDP's WhatsApp group, stating that the government has put stop to the project following discussions and vote by Economic Council. He added that the project was called off due to his involvement in it.
Speaker Nasheed further said that he intends to inform Dutch Docklands on how such procedures run in the Maldives. He described the decision by the government to cap the project as a bit 'too much'.
Minister Fayyaz released details of the 2011 agreement between Dutch Docklands and the government, calling it a scam. He added that he does not believe the project will take off.
Minister Fayyaz further stated that Dutch Docklands had proposed a project that would be beneficial for the company, adding that the existing laws and regulations would need to be revised for the project to be carried out as per proposal.
The minister further accused that the company had sold off three out of five lagoons contracted to them for the project. He added that the company plans to reclaim six islands in the lagoon to be sold off as well. Minister Fayyaz stated that he does not believe Dutch Docklands will develop resorts or build residential houses according to the proposed plans.
Minister Fayyaz further stated that Dutch Docklands was using Speaker Nasheed's name to further their own interests in the project.
