Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives has stated the commission will take action against political parties involved in storming the yoga event to mark International Yoga Day.
The yoga event hosted by Youth Ministry in collaboration with Indian Cultural Centre and Indian High Commission on Tuesday morning was cut short after a group people stormed the event at the national stadium carrying flags containing the Shahada.
The group threatened the yoga event participants and vandalised the venue. Maldives Police Service (MPS) used pepper spray to disperse the rioters from the stadium.
Following the incident, Youth Minister Mahloof has heavily criticised PPM leadership and Jamiyyath Salaf, stating the event was obstructed for political motives. Salaf has since issued a statement denying any involvement in the incident. PPM, however, has not responded to the minister's remarks.
MPS issued a statement following the violence at the event, stating that the flags used by the group who stormed the stadium were provided from the PPM office.
Speaking to 'One' about the incident, Vice President of EC, Ismail Habeeb, said the commission will take action against any political parties confirmed by MPS to be involved in the violence.
"EC does not take action on its own in such matters. However, if MPS reveals political party involvement in the incident to us, we will take action against the party", Habeeb said.
President Solih took to Twitter following the incident, stating those responsible for the incident will be brought before law.
