Sri Lanka has announced weekly fuel quotas for motorists on Sunday as fuel shortage continues to worsen in the island nation.

Sri Lanka's Energy Minister, Kanchana Wijesekera, said that state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation is currently struggling to finance oil imports to meet the raising demand.

Wijesekera said that consumers would have to register at filling stations and receive a guaranteed weekly quota until the country's financial system becomes stable.

This new system is set to be in place by the first week of July. Sri Lankan government has already limited fuel sales in mid-April, with 4 litres of petrol for a motorcycle, 5 for three-wheelers, and 19.5 for cars and SUVs.

In an interview with Associate Press, Sri Lankan Prime Minister on Saturday said the country would be open to buying oil from Russia if no other avenues open up.

Sri Lanka continues to suffer through their worst economic crisis as the government is in the works with IMF and other countries such as India and China to bail the island nation out of the crisis.
