Home Minister Imran Abdulla has stated that the current government is also maintaining the stance on not enforcing the death penalty, same as all previous governments.
Minister Imran made the statement while answering questions raised by Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq during today's parliament session. MP Thoriq had questioned the Minister on the government's policy on and positioning on the death penalty.
Imran stated that the government intends on continuing the moratorium on not enforcing death penalties, same as previous governments. The Minister noted that various talks about the issue has happened at various places previously, but highlighted that none of the governments present or past had changed their stance on the issue.
Imran's comments were hinting at the words of former President Abdulla Yameen, who had claimed that his government would implement the death penalty without hesitation. As such in 2014, the Home Ministry had ordered Maldives Correctional Services to enforce a death sentence if the Supreme Court had ruled so.
The order was signed by then Home Minister Umar Naseer, which also asked to prepare all necessary arrangements to carry out such a sentence.
Azleen Ahmed, who was the Home Minister after Umar Naseer had also assured that all necessary works to implement death sentences would be done by September of 2017. However, the death penalty was not implemented even when the term ended.
