Employment Tribunal has ordered MVR 1.9 million in compensation for 3 men who were suspended from their jobs 9 years ago.
The three men were suspended from their jobs at the Home for People with Special Needs in K. Guraidhoo in 2013 over sexual assault allegations. However, Criminal Court in 2017 ruled there was not enough evidence to prosecute the three men.
The men were terminated from their jobs in May 2021 and submitted wrongful termination claim to the Tribunal for compensation. The Tribunal ruled last week that there was no grounds for the men to be re-employed but stated that they should be compensated for the suspension period.
As such, one man is to be compensated over MVR 800,000 in salary, MVR 25,000 as Ramadan allowance and MVR 32,000 as compensation. The second man is to be compensated MVR 500,000 in salary, MVR 25,000 as Ramadan allowance and MVR 20,000 as compensation while the third man is to be compensated MVR 499,000 in salary, MVR 25,000 in Ramadan allowance, and MVR 20,000 as compensation.
A fourth man alleged with sexual assault in the case was terminated from his job in May 2021. The Tribunal ruled that due to lack of procedural fairness, he should be compensated MVR 17,000.
